Large Pre-raphaelite Tapestry : "dante's Dream"
“Dante’sDream”: tapestry/embroidery, 81 x 120 cm, mounted in a carved wooden frame,95 x 134 cm.
There are objects or works of art for which we would love to turn back time tosee them in their original state.
Thus, this tapestry—a “find from theattic”—with its faded hues, whose reverse side reveals the splendor of theoriginals, is dusty and has a few holes caused by moths (see photo taken against the light in the sun) and is mounted in a slightly padded frame; it must certainly have once adorned a Neo-Gothic residence…
The painting that inspired it is well known to lovers of Pre-Raphaelite art; it is “Dante’s Dream” by none other than Dante-Gabriel Rossetti, in which we see the Florentine poet, guided by an angel holding his hand, approaching the bier of Beatrice, sheltered by a canopy held by two women, the angel kissing Beatrice on behalf of Dante, who cannot do so himself…
Without getting bogged down in psychoanalytic interpretations, the work nevertheless gives usmuch to ponder and dream about…
It appears to be monogrammed “M. de P. M.,” and although the painting is dated 1871, I believe it was executed in the 1880s.
