Ernest Gabard : "the Dancer"
Ernest Gabard (1879-1957): "The Dancer," orange terracotta, 29.5 x 10 x 14 cm, signed on the base and certified "original" with the artist's monogram below it.
For those unfamiliar with this artist from Béarn, it's worth noting that this sculptor, briefly a disciple of Rodin, painter, illustrator, and poster artist created the archetype of the Béarnais, the famous Caddetou, which was reproduced in statuettes, including a rare automobile mascot, one of the very first posters on the theme of aviation (Pau was home to the first flying school), and countless sculptures, both religious and secular.
Mobilized during the Great War, its horrors inspired him to create numerous pacifist war memorials, but his works also adorn fountains and churches.
Our sculpture, in the more frivolous vein of his work, depicts a swirling dancer whose clothes billow around her, a veritable modern-day Tanagra figurine.
