Jean Rigaud : "doëlan, (finistère), The Harbor At Low Tide"
JeanRigaud (1912–1999) : “Doëlan, Finistère, the Harbor atLow Tide,” oil on canvas, 46 × 55 cm, mounted in a Parnassian frame, 54 ×74 cm.
Although painted before he was named Official Painter to the Navy (he received this title in1956, and his stay in Doëlan was in 1954), this is one of the finest works wehave ever had, thanks to the boldness of the composition, the warmand luminous palette set against cool tones (which may seem paradoxical, but isexquisitely rendered here), and the transparency of the water—all of which combine to make itparticularly desirable…
The artist participated in group exhibitions, notably at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he served as ajury member and committee member; he received numerous awards, and his paintings arein the collections of many museums.
