Louis XV Period Elephant Clock
Artist: Cadier
A gilt and patinated bronze elephant clock. The movement is surrounded by a foliate motif that extends upwards and is attached to the elephant's back by a lambrequin. The elephant is flanked by a snail and a dog, mounted on a rocaille base. The elephant's anatomy may seem surprising, particularly its ears and feet: 18th-century visual sources are lacking to depict such an animal.
