Mahogany Pedestal Table Stamped Martin Carlin And Jme

Artist: Martin Carlin

Mahogany tripod pedestal table, mahogany veneer and gilded bronzes. Inspired by English fashion, this elegant circular pedestal table is encircled by a pierced bronze gallery. The central fluted shaft filled with gilded bronze asparagus is tightened by a thick ring of laurel leaves joining the base. The base consists of three sinuous legs embellished with scrapers and flowers, and finished with lion paws on castors. This type of pedestal table, typical of the late Louis XVI reign, can be found in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The same pattern can be seen here, namely the use of mahogany, a wide top, a bronze fluted shaft, scrapers on the tripod base and castors for ease of movement.

Martin Carlin (circa 1730-1785) was among the most important Parisian furniture craftsmen of the last third of the 18th century. Born in Germany, he moved to Paris in 1759 and married one of the sisters of Jean-François Oeben, Louis XV's celebrated cabinetmaker-mechanic.

After becoming a master, he set up his workshop in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine and immediately met with considerable success. This notoriety was closely linked to Carlin's privileged commercial ties with Simon-Philippe Poirier, the leading dealer in luxury objects and furniture of the time. It was through Poirier that Carlin produced his most luxurious furniture between 1766 and 1778, adorned with Sèvres porcelain plates. Then, from the mid-1770s, he favored furniture decorated with Japanese lacquer panels. His after-death inventory reveals that the cabinetmaker worked exclusively for the great merciers of the time; in 1785, for example, the sons Darnault and Dominique Daguerre were among his main customers.
