Like his better known brother Jurriaan Andriessen (1742–1819), who was alsohis teacher, Anthonie specialized in painted wall decorations, which werehugely popular from the middle of the 18th century.1 Jurriaan’s sonChristiaan (1775–1846) kept a visual diary between 1805 and 1808 which hasbecome one of the most iconic documents of its time. Both brothers were activein the Amsterdam Teekenacademie (drawing academy); their pupilsincluded some of the best-known 19th-century Dutch artists, such as WouterJohannes van Troostwijk, Hendrik Voogd and Jean Grandjean.

The majority of Anthonie’s drawings are landscapes, sometimes executed incolour washes, sometimes in grey or brown ink. They are strongly reminiscent ofdrawings by masters of the 17th century, like the present attractive sheet, that recalls the works of Albert Cuyp (1620–1691). Anthonie is known to havestudied the masters of the Golden Age, and drawn copies after paintings by JanWijnants, Adriaen van de Velde, Dominicus van Tol and Frans Hals are known fromhistoric sale catalogues.

Good condition for the age, a few usual minor folds.
