Pierre-Jules Mêne was born in Paris in 1810, the son of a metal turner. By 1837 he was casting his bronze sculptures in his own foundry. He is considered one of the pioneers of animal sculpture in the nineteenth century, specialising in hounds, horses, cows, sheep and goats, which were en vogue during the Second Empire.
Mêne specialised in small bronzes, made for private collectors. This animated figure of a hound also exists in versions with a bronze base, but without the base the figure becomes more realistic and lifelike.
Very good condition and with especially good patination.
