"Rare Casson Panel, Italy, 16th Century."
A striking casdone panel, executed in a very hard, and therefore very heavy, wood. The work consists of very regular, incised stippling, framing areas of wood enhanced with drawings in black paint or perhaps India ink (?). These drawings are presented as flat, decorated friezes, the largest of which is in the antique, mythological style. A chariot drawn by a horse carries a goddess and a cupid. Soldiers are depicted in front and behind. These same figures appear on other friezes. The drawings are in perfect condition. A very distinctive technique. Animals (dogs, rabbits) frolic around the edge. Italy, 16th century, very good condition. A crack in the lower left corner does not affect the decoration of the panel.
