Graphite drawing, ink, and ink wash. A soldier, wearing a large helmet with a plume, a breastplate, and a short kilt, holding a short sword in his right hand, appears to be threatening a young man, dressed in ancient style, who looks at him with dignity. The young man holds a long staff in his right hand and appears to be trying to calm his opponent. A young woman, looking frightened, clings to his neck.
Behind the warrior, an elderly man holds a spear, and an African soldier carries a large shield as well as a spear. Probably a mythological subject. The drawing features a great deal of detail in its very fine execution. It is mounted on a pale green Marie Louise plate, dating from the early 20th century.
