"Benjamin Barker De Bath (1776 - 1838) - A Mountainous Landscape With Figurines."
A beautiful, atmospheric early 19th-century landscape depicting a mountainous, wooded region with a waterfall and figures engaged in conversation. Benjamin Barker (1776–1838), a landscape painter, belonged to the dynasty of Welsh painters, Benjamin Barker II, a descendant of Benjamin Barker II, foreman and enamel painter at the Pontypool Porcelain Manufactory. Born in Pontypool, he later settled in Bath. While his father specialized in hunting scenes and animals, Benjamin achieved considerable renown as a landscape painter between 1813 and 1820. He frequently exhibited his views and landscape compositions at the Watercolour Society and, between 1800 and 1821, at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited at the British Institution. His work "English Landscape Scenery," a collection of forty-eight aquatints published in 1824, was highly acclaimed. He died in Totnes, after a long illness, on March 2, 1838, at the age of 62. Thales Fielding engraved forty-eight of his landscapes using aquatint. This remarkable work is in excellent condition and ready to hang in a period frame with a gilt composition and patinated gilt.
