Impressive Shahsavan kilim from Persia. The piece is signed (see photos). Woven wool on wool in the traditional manner. The weave is extremely fine and refined, the piece is supple. The vegetal hues are remarkably fresh, the indigo blues are dense and saturated. It is a marvel of striking contrasts, notably with its large ecru ram's horn motifs. This type of size is extremely rare in antique kilims, which leads me to believe that this kilim was probably commissioned by its first owner, undoubtedly belonging to high society... Circa 1880.
