Elegant and large pewter cimarre (small drinking cup) in baluster form with a high pedestal, quarter-round cup, domed lid with a finial and tassel thumb rest, fitted with a fixed handle and a bracket-shaped drop handle.
The maker's mark is listed but incompletely struck and worn, that of Philibert Lespinette, who became a master around 1680: crowned hammer / (P).(L).N.
On the exterior base, the control mark, most likely bearing a royal symbol, was deliberately damaged during the French Revolution, as is often the case.
Height: 28.8 cm.
Joinville or Montbard, late 17th century.
This master was active in both centers, and the illegible control mark therefore does not allow us to specify which one this cimarre originated from.

In very good condition.
Cimares were mainly produced in Champagne, however, we have found a few examples. in Ile-de-France and Franche-Comté. They were intended for serving wine at the table when one wished to honor one's guests somewhat.
The one presented here was obtained using the longitudinal casting technique in use until around the year 1700. Indeed, one can distinguish inside the two vertical welds of the two symmetrical parts removed from the mold composed of two shells, as well as on the inner bottom the pellet that plugs the hole left by the central axis of the molding. Then, from the very beginning of the 18th century, the masters abandoned this technique and adopted that of radial casting.
