Shirvan Rug - Caucasus. Circa 1920. 200 X 120 Cm

A captivating Shirvan rug originating from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus. Woven and knotted wool on wool using traditional methods. As is typical of antique Caucasian rugs, the pile is very short, almost flat. The rug is supple and surprisingly lightweight. This is due to the fineness and regularity of the knotted knot. A true work of art. Aesthetically, it features a rather subdued palette, with the exception of a saturated indigo blue in the central section. This is the originality and, one might say, the soul of this piece. Three large medallions in the central field are framed by a main border with stylized floral motifs. In short, the rug possesses a rare elegance. It is far removed from classic Caucasian rugs. Here, simplicity reigns; the motifs seem sculpted into the material itself. The mastery is complete.
