The knife blade is made of solid silver. The handle is carved in the shape of a horse's leg with a shod hoof. The "shoe" is also made of solid silver.
The carving is very detailed, depicting the horse's feathering and the nails used for shoeing, also in silver.
The knife comes in a double-entry sheath, probably designed to hold the same knife with a steel blade.
The blade is hallmarked:
A very partial hallmark: two interlaced Ls for small silver items, used in Paris from 1780 to 1789.
The date letter R for the year 1780-81.
A discharge mark for the same period: a helmeted head.
A trace of a silversmith's mark.
A superb knife, with this very rare and finely executed decoration. Ideal for sharing a delicious cake with fellow horse lovers.
