The scene, rendered in a style characteristic of the mid-19th century, somewhere between romantic narrative and symbolism, depicts Medea preparing a potion, an episode that can be linked to the myth of Pelias, in which she deceives her daughters with a false elixir of rejuvenation.
The work is not signed on the painted side, but bears an old handwritten inscription on the reverse indicating ‘C. Nicholls’ followed by the date 1857, as well as an annotation in English identifying the subject:
‘Medea, Daughter of Aeëtes, King of Colchis, Celebrated for her skill in magic.’
This type of inscription on the back is consistent with certain practices observed in the work of Charles Wynne Nicholls.
The style, pictorial treatment and iconography are consistent with the artist's known output.
Period wooden and gilded stucco frame, probably original.
Charles Wynne Nicholls (20 October 1831 – 24 January 1903) was an Irish painter specialising in genre scenes, historical subjects and Orientalist scenes. Born in Dublin, he came from a middle-class family: his father, John Nicholls, was an apothecary in Dublin and his mother was Martha Craven. Nicholls studied painting at the Royal Dublin Society's Schools and also attended the Royal Hibernian Academy. He began exhibiting in 1859 as a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and also exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy in London. In 1864, he left Ireland to settle in London, but continued to send his paintings to Dublin for exhibitions throughout his life. Representative of the Victorian pictorial genre of portraits and cityscapes, Charles Wynne Nicholls was a highly talented artist whose genre and oriental scenes were very popular and easily found buyers among Victorian art collectors.
