Sculpture “portrait Of Michèle” By Miguel Berrocal (1933–2006) And Assembly Manual

Artist: Miguel Berrocal (1933–2006)
This exquisite, complete sculpture of “Portrait of Michèle” is one of the most iconic works by Miguel Berrocal (1933–2006), a Spanish artist renowned for his conceptual yet playful modular sculptures.
The “Michèle” model was designed in 1969. It takes the form of a stylized female head, with interlocking volumes and organic lines. The work reveals a highly complex construction organized around an eye that turns out to be a ring.
Made of nickel-plated metal, the sculpture consists of 17 elements fitted together using an ingenious mechanical system, characteristic of Berrocal’s work. Designed to be assembled and disassembled, it transcends the purely sculptural dimension to offer a genuine experience of manipulation and understanding of volume.
Numbered 2303 and signed, it is part of a series of 9,500 editions.
This “Portrait of Michèle” is accompanied by an original assembly booklet, not associated with this specific copy (number 2364), but corresponding to the model.
At the intersection of sculpture, play, and engineering, the “Portrait of Michèle” fully embodies Berrocal’s exploration of the decomposition of volume and the active participation of the owner.
A piece that has become iconic, both for its form and for its ingenious design.
