Important Japanese blue and white porcelain vase, Japan, late 19th century.
Of large baluster form with a wide undulating rim, this impressive vase is finely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with traditional Japanese scenes depicting figures, landscapes, architecture and stylised vegetation.The body is fitted with two sculptural side handles in the form of mythical guardian lions (Fo dogs), modelled in high relief, adding strong decorative and sculptural presence.The neck is decorated with compartmentalised floral and geometric panels, characteristic of late Meiji period export porcelain.
