"Kuba Rug. Caucasus. Late 19th Century. 270 X 135 Cm"
A marvel! More than a rug, this piece is a true narrative object, an open book representing the entire culture and beliefs of the nomadic peoples of the Caucasus. Originating from Kuba in Azerbaijan (Caucasus), it is traditionally woven and knotted wool-on-wool. The warp has a salt-and-pepper texture. The pile is short, and the rug is supple and lightweight. The knotted stitch is worthy of the most experienced weavers, demonstrating complete mastery. One of the most remarkable aspects of this Caucasian rug is the richness and diversity of its motifs. It contains a whole cartography of symbols originating over the centuries. Three large octagonal medallions in the central field each feature eight-pointed stars, typical of this wonderful production region. Multiple crosses, rosettes, and ram's horns are also present. Most of the motifs have symbolic meanings related to protection and the cosmos. The main borders are sublime, featuring a succession of angular meanders known as Greek keys. Foliage on the outer border. Numerous animal motifs as well. The whole is absolutely beautiful. The colors live up to this rich composition. Various indigo blues in different concentrations, turquoise, midnight blue. Red ochre, bottle green, khaki, straw yellow, ivory. Numerous abrash, especially on the blues. A constellation on a Caucasian night field...! Circa 1880. Very good condition. Dimensions: 270 x 135 cm. Laurent, Beauty of Kilims
