Louise Germain. Still Life With Fruit. Aix-en-provence.
Artist: Louise Germain ( 1874 - 1939 )
Louise Germain was born in Gap, in the Hautes-Alpes region of France, but spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Algeria. She returned to France before the age of twenty, as evidenced by her enrollment in 1894 in the classes of the animal painter Walter Bildecombe in Marseille, who influenced her work. At the age of 24, in the autumn of 1898, she met Joseph Ravaisou, with whom she would share a studio in Aix-en-Provence. This encounter marked a turning point in her painting. Previously a naturalist, inspired by her teacher Bildecombe, she added greater inventiveness to her work. She also worked alongside Paul Cézanne. She participated in group exhibitions organized by the Société des Femmes Artistes Modernes (FAM), founded in 1931 by Marie-Anne Camax-Zoegger. She is listed among the artists in the 1935 exhibition at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery. Later, she cared for Ravaisou on the eve of his death and died in 1939 in Aix-en-Provence.
