Burmese Bronze Bell, 19th Century

A 19th-century Burmese bronze bell adorned with two Bilu (ogre) heads, announcing the presence of an elephant. The Bilu is a type of ferocious demon found in Burmese folklore. Consequently, the Burmese perform various exorcisms to drive the Bilu from their villages. According to legend, when the Bilu heard the words of the Buddha, they renounced their evil ways and fought for the Buddhist cause.
