Imari-arita Set, Japan, Meiji Era (1868–1912)
Artist: Fours D'arita
These three Imari pieces from the Arita kilns in Japan, dating from the Meiji period, feature the three iconic colors of traditional Imari: cobalt blue as an underglaze, iron red (or brick red) as an overglaze, and gold accents. One features a floral arrangement (Ikebana or kado) in the center, a classic motif highly prized in the West. The other features a central medallion decorated with a phoenix (Hōō), a symbol of grace and prosperity, surrounded by geometric and floral motifs (Kikyo, peonies). The vase echoes the phoenix theme in its large decorative panels, surrounded by stylized peonies and accented by a geometric frieze at the base.
On the first plate: The underglaze mark depicts a stylized knot or ribbon motif (Fuku or a very common Buddhist/Taoist auspicious symbol) painted in cobalt blue beneath the glaze. It is accompanied by supple plant stems painted along the border (Fuku Chō).On the second plate, a double concentric blue circle (double ring) is visible—a classic framing motif that most likely surrounds a mark in characters (Kanji) or a similar symbol. On the base of the vase, it features a solid, slightly hollowed-out base with an unglazed foot, finished with the understated style typical of Arita’s artisanal productions.
