The candelabra rest on a scalloped base adorned with rocaille foliage and shells. Acanthus scrolls in curves and counter-curves spring from this base and intertwine to form a lively, swirling stem. The stem extends into an openwork helical design, lending the whole piece a great sense of lightness.
Three branches from the acanthus scrolls extend from the stem to form the candle arms, terminating in bobeches and sockets for the candles.
These candelabra are an ode to the Rococo style, and one can sense the influence of the great goldsmiths of the early reign of Louis XV, particularly Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier and his masterpiece housed in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
This candlestick is made of white metal, probably tin or a tin alloy, with a superb silvery-gray patina.
The candlesticks are hallmarked:
V (a boat) and S (the hallmark of Victor Saglier).
Victor Saglier was a goldsmith, ceramist, politician, etc., born in 1809. Renowned for the quality of his work, he achieved great fame during the Second Empire, which continued with the adoption of Art Nouveau styles at the end of the century.
He died in 1894, and his business was run by his brothers until 1948.
A magnificent pair of candlesticks, remarkable for the swirling dynamism of their design and the lightness created by the spaces between the scrolls.
