Bi Disc - China - Green Marbled Stone, Likely Jade
Bi DISC
China
Green marbled stone, probably jade
Diameter: 4.5 cm
Thickness: 1.5 cm
(on bronze base)
Large flat disc made of polished green stone, with a circular hole in the centre.
The earliest jade bi discs date back to the Liangzhu culture (4300 to 2400 BC), when examples were found at burial sites. Since then, numerous variations have been found, decorated with different ornaments and engraved motifs.
Although their original function remains unknown to this day, bi discs are believed to have protective powers – reserved, however, for individuals of high social standing.
Furthermore, the book Rites of Zhou – compiled during the Han dynasty, which describes the various social forms and ceremonial rites of the Zhou dynasty – indicates that the bi is related to worship and sacrifices to heaven.
