Large Hst "the Water Carriers" After Ernest Hebert's "the Cervarolles"
Artist: D'après Ernest Hebert
Very large oil on canvas, 190 x 108 cm unframed, 200 x 116 cm framed, depicting water carriers from the Roman state of Cervara di Roma, after the painting by Ernest Hébert. It is presented in a large giltwood frame decorated with shells at each corner. It was in Italy that Hébert found the subject of his painting while observing, in Cervara di Roma, the women going to the fountain, their heads laden with heavy copper pots (the conca). These women are depicted at the moment they meet in the village, the oldest walking uphill with her full container, the two younger ones walking downhill to fill theirs.
The somewhat Moorish appearance of these women lends the painting a slight Orientalist touch.
There are several representations of this painting, of varying sizes and quality. The original is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and a copy is in the Musée de Grenoble.
This painting is on its original canvas and has two small restorations visible in the photo showing the back of the painting.
It bears no visible signature or monogram, just a difficult-to-decipher signature on the back of the canvas (Courbez?).
