Louis Welden Hawkins, born in Esslingen (German Empire) on July 1, 1849, and died in the 17th arrondissement of Paris on May 24, 1910, was a British painter who became a naturalized French citizen. He was the son of William Hawkins, a British naval officer, and Louise Von Welden, an Austrian baroness. Destined for a military career, he broke with his family in 1873 and settled in France. He became a naturalized French citizen in 1895. Settling in Paris, he studied under William Bouguereau, Jules Lefebvre, and Gustave Boulanger at the Académie Julian from 1873 to 1876 and also attended the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1876.
