Angel In Terme. Element Of Polychrome And Gilded Wood Sculpture. Italy, 18th Century
A decorative element from an altarpiece or polychrome carved wooden paneling depicting an angel in the form of a terminus. Italy, 18th century. The angel is shown with his hands crossed over his chest in a gesture of devotion. His face is simple, with wide-open eyes and long, curly hair. His gilded wooden wings frame his face. Below is a lion's head, a symbol of strength and protection. The whole is finished with a polychrome and gilded molding. On top is a tray resting on a capital, suggesting it may have been used as a console table. The gilding and polychromy show some losses, cracks, and fissures; the lower volute has been restored. The piece remains in very good condition and has a strong visual and decorative impact. More information available upon request.
