Heron's Engine, Aeolipile, Scientific Instrument, XIX Century
Heron's engine or aeolipile, scientific instrument, XIX century.
The engine of Eron is considered to be the first steam engine and the first jet engine in history, invented by Heron of Alexandria in the 1st century AD.
The device exploits the transformation of thermal energy into rotary mechanical energy.
The instrument consists of a boiler resting on three brass legs which is heated by an underlying flame until steam production. In the upper part, we find a copper sphere where two curved tubes protrude placed in opposite directions.
The steam exits at high speed from the nozzles, generating a thrust that quickly rotates the ball.
