LEGRAS: Pair of 19th-century vases, known as Pompeii vases, in white opaline glass cased in rouge de chine coloured glass and decorated with applied gold motifs and aventurine inclusions.
These vases are part of an innovative series presented by Legras at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition. A special issue of Le Figaro newspaper at the time described them "as if fashioned from blocks of volcanic lava."
Superb and lavishly decorated, they are in very good condition.
