Original 18th-century Sanguine Drawing Attributed To Debucourt: "the Traveler And His Mount", 18th-century Gilt Frame
Artist: Debucourt
Magnificently presented in a Louis XV period 18th-century carved and gilt Bérain winged frame, mounted with metal bars, this remarkable sanguine drawing, in its antique mat with the cartouche "Debucourt" (1755-1832), is a French School work from the second half of the 18th century. It is an uncommon and slightly caricatural work depicting an elderly horseman in a wide-brimmed bicorn hat, riding his fine mount with great detail, walking gracefully in a countryside landscape. This work dates from the very end of the reign of Louis XVI, and the artist displays great poetry in his fine sanguine drawings, demonstrating a rare capacity for observation. We are in the presence of a high-quality work in very good condition, beautifully presented on a large, thick sheet of paper. A bit of history: Philibert-Louis Debucourt was famous in his time for his great virtuosity. Initially a painter, this Parisian was admitted to the Academy in 1781 and began his engraving career that same year. His confident hand allowed him to create expressive works. Philibert-Louis Debucourt, born in Paris on February 13, 1755, and died on September 22, 1832, in Belleville, is known and recognized as a French painter and engraver of great artistic talent. His works are exhibited in major collections and national museums.
