Important Christ On The Cross In A Carved Baroque Frame - 18th Century - Italy
Important Christ on the Cross in a Carved Baroque Frame - 18th Century - Italy.
Large Christ on the Cross presented in a richly molded and gilded wooden frame, openwork and adorned with acanthus scrolls, florets, and rocaille motifs, typical of the late Baroque style.
Description:
The upper section is enlivened by a cloud with three winged angels (putti) in high relief, with expressive faces and flowing hair, arranged around bundles of gilded rays.
The lower section is centered by a carved holy water font, integrated into the decoration, confirming a devotional purpose for a home or small chapel.
At the center, Christ on the Cross:
Gilded wooden cross.
Finely sculpted corpus with slender anatomy, inclined head, loincloth tied at the hip, meticulous drapery.
Attached by visible antique nails at the hands and feet.
The background is covered with an antique textile (probably silk), now patinated.
Italian work, second half of the 18th century, evident in the quality of the sculpture, the dynamism of the frame, and the treatment of the angelic figures.
Dimensions: Height: 85 cm x Width: 49 cm.
Condition:
Some wear, chips, and occasional losses to the gilding. Cracks, micro-marks, and natural wear to the corpus.
Overall sound, stable structure, strong decorative presence.
A work of high decorative and devotional quality, representative of Italian Baroque religious production, ideal for a collector, interior decoration, or display in a heritage setting.
