Rare Cartel Like Watch Stand - Sun King Royal Monogram Double Ll- Louis XIV Period
Contoured watch stand made of wood covered in gilded, embossed leather, featuring a decorative scheme of military attributes, masks, scrolling foliage, shells, and cartouches.
The sides display attributes of love and the hunt, along with the double-L cipher of King Louis XIV.
The watch signed by clockmaker "Bonnet in London " on display with th stand is sold separatly in our Gallery.
Height 27.5 cm, width 17 cm; suitable for an "onion" watch with a 4.2 cm dial.
Similar watch stands are in museums:
- one is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (Fitzhenry gift, 1914) and are illustrated in *Tardy* (3rd edition, p. 142).
-another example is identified n the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (inventory reference A146); it was included in the "Trompe-l'œil" exhibition held from February 12, 2012, to November 15, 2013. Notably, this piece bears an inscription reading "small piece belonging to the King and coming from the Château de Versailles."
Also to note the 2009 sale by Daguerre (Lot 187) of a similar watch stand sold for or €3,400 (expert: Derouineau).
