Angelelli from life, Thebes, Egypt, on the back some other sketches by the artist. measures ⁰22 x 14 cm, frame 25x31 cm.ANGELELLI, Giuseppe He was born on December 7th. 1803 in Coimbra (Portugal) by Piero, Roman, and Carolina Grifoni, Florentine; he followed his parents in 1807 to Brazil and in 1816 to Peru, then to France and England. In 1818 he settled in Florence where he attended the drawing schools of Pietro Benvenuti and Pietro Ermini at the Academy. In 1827 he was called to be part, as a designer, of the expedition to Egypt promoted by the Tuscan government and led by the archaeologist Ippolito Rosellini. His work as a designer (1828-1829) was used for the engravings, partly made by him, of Rosellini's work (The monuments of Egypt and Nubia, Atlas, 3 vols., Pisa 1832, 1834, 1844). Returning to Florence, he was commissioned by the Grand Duke to paint the members of the Franco-Tuscan expedition at the ruins of Thebes (Florence, Archaeological Museum). He also painted African landscapes and portraits (Portrait of his Wife, Self-Portrait). -ALT He died on Nov 4. 1844.
