Au Bon Sauvage Pendulum
An early 19th-century Empire-style clock in chased, gilded, and patinated bronze.
This rare clock depicts "Atala Freeing the Indian Chactas," an episode from Chateaubriand's novel Atala, published in 1801. Chactas, the adopted son of a Christian, is taken prisoner by an enemy tribe.
But Atala, the chief's daughter, also raised in the Christian faith, frees him and flees with him. The story, as we know, ends tragically; the base of the clock illustrates Atala's funeral in bas-relief.
A rare model with very fine mercury gilding.
A French piece, circa 1820.
Height: 40 cm, Width: 28.5 cm, Depth: 10 cm.
This clock is in its original condition and needs cleaning.
The mechanism is in good working order but should be checked by a watchmaker.
