A magnificent and rare terracotta sculpture depicting a young girl carrying her brother on her back, created by the Villeroy & Boch factory in Merzich an der Ruhr, Germany; resting on its original terracotta base.
Stamp on the base with the inscription "Villeroy & Boch," signed and dated "Wagmuller 1871."
Starting in 1879, Villeroy & Boch established a workshop in Merzich for the production of monumental sculptures in terracotta and stoneware.
This sculpture is based on the original model, which was made in marble as well as bronze by the famous contemporary artist and sculptor Michael Wagmüller (1831–1898), who also worked in England.
This particular sculpture was exhibited at the World’s Fair in Vienna (Austria) in 1873.
