Clock "threatening Love" Louis XVI XIXème
A highly decorative Napoleon III period clock, circa 1860, in the Louis
XVI style. A superb patinated bronze sculpture depicts a winged cherub
seated on a flowery rock. The delicate gesture, with a finger to its
lips, symbolizes secrecy or discretion, inspired by the theme of
Cupid's arrow.
The imposing fluted Carrara marble base is finely ornamented with gilt bronze. The sides feature a frieze of openwork scrollwork depicting musical cherubs framing the front, which is adorned with a thick floral garland and a garland of ribbons and bows highlighting the domed white enamel dial decorated with a delicate polychrome garland motif. The dial is protected by a domed glass set within a guilloché bezel.
The original mechanism remains unchanged. It strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell.
