Study Of Saint Paul After Ingres In "the Handing Over Of The Keys To Saint Peter".
Artist: A Identifier
A very fine oil study on canvas depicting Saint Paul in Ingres' painting, "Jesus Giving Saint Peter the Keys to Paradise," in the Ingres Museum in Montauban. This study, slightly later than the painting itself, was likely executed by a student or follower of the master, yet to be identified. Perhaps Victor Orsel or someone from that period. In Ingres' painting, a man, standing back in the shadows, extends an open hand, as if in a coded gesture of acclamation or adoration. This is believed to be Paul, who is not actually present in the Gospel of Matthew, as the Acts of the Apostles recounts that Paul converted after having an apparition of the resurrected Jesus. See attached photos. It is an oil on canvas, with a gold background around the portrait. The fine canvas is mounted on thick cardboard. Presented in its original keyed frame, never removed, made of wood and gilt stucco. Dimensions of the painting without frame: 31.5 cm x 20.5 cm. Overall dimensions with frame: 44 cm x 33 cm.
