Adolf Henning studied from 1823 at the Berlin Academy, of which he became a member and professor in 1839. In 1833 he was admitted to the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf as a history and portrait painter, then traveled to Italy from 1833 to 1835. Our painting can be dated to these years.
