"1843, By F.j. Flaxland. Portrait Of A Student "
Here, now restored, both canvas and paint, is a portrait painted in 1843 by Frédéric Joseph Flaxland (1814-1883). This artist, born in Bouxwiller in Alsace, first studied in Strasbourg where he received a first prize, frequented the studio of Gabriel Guerin, then settled successively in Paris and Munich, while maintaining a strong connection with Alsace, which preserves numerous works by him in its churches and collections. He also served as a general councilor for Kaysersberg and as an agronomist. This work of remarkable quality depicts a student, certainly in traditional attire, warmly but elegantly dressed (this is eastern France, after all...), with a certain nonchalance, a cigarillo in his hand. The architecture in the background is discreetly suggested. The frame has been restored and the painting freshly cleaned. A very old relining should be noted. Dimensions of the canvas: 66 cm x 55 cm
