French School, Circa 1840, Portrait d'Un Homme De Qualité, Oil On Wood, Monogrammed
French school, circa 1840,
Portrait d'un homme de qualité,
monogrammed "D.L." lower right
oil on wood panel
28.8 x 24.8
In a handsome antique frame: 48 x 43.5 cm
The gentleman's hairstyle, and in particular his sideburns, allow us to date this portrait to the time of King Louis-Philippe, who made it fashionable, i.e. between 1830 and 1848. The antique wood panel also confirms an early 19th century date.
The signed monogram on the painting has not yet enabled us to identify the artist. Interestingly enough, the artist chose a rather relaxed pose for his subject, who is leaning against a parapet. Clearly, he didn't want a stiff pose, preferring a natural one, typical of the Romantic period, when artists sought to free themselves from old conventions.
