Pair Of Sinombre Lamps In Le Creusot Crystal And Bronze From The Restoration Period

A rare pair of oil lamps, known as "astral lamps," "crown lamps," or "sinombre lamps," made of Creusot crystal and bronze.

The octagonal base, decorated with diamond points, egg-and-dart motifs, and gadroons, supports the baluster-shaped stem.

The oil reservoir is circular (crown-shaped), hence the name "crown lamp." The oil is conveyed through two arms to constantly saturate the wick.
These lamps are usually made of painted sheet metal or bronze; our crystal lamps are very rare and exceptional.

There is a tiny chip in the center of one side of the octagonal base, almost invisible (see photo with the arrow).

These lamps can be easily fitted with lampshades without any modification to transform them into lighting lamps. The crown is removable and screwed into the upper part of the lamp, allowing it to be either removed or attached, thus offering the possibility of two lamp heights.

These lamps, also called "astral lamps," are an invention patented around 1810 by the engineer I. Bordier-Marcet.
The name "sinombre" (meaning "shadowless" in Latin) refers to the invention of this type of lamp in 1820 by the German engineer J. Heinrich Wilhelm; it limits the shadow cast by the reservoir through the presence of a lampshade (glass globe).

History of the Le Creusot crystal factory: In the 18th century, crystal objects came from England. Due to the enthusiasm for these objects during the reign of Louis XVI, a factory was established in Sèvres under the patronage of Marie Antoinette, "the Queen's Crystal Factory." By decree of the King's Council of State in 1787, it was transferred to Le Creusot near Montcenis to reduce manufacturing costs (proximity to coal to fuel the furnaces). After difficulties between 1782 and 1812, the establishment was sold in 1818 to the principal creditor, Mr. Chagot, who received a gold medal in 1823 and was authorized to grant the title of Royal Manufactory. The Manufactory was sold in 1833 to Baccarat and Saint-Louis.
