Louis XVI Pendulum "venus And Love" In Marble And Gilt Bronze

Louis XVI period mantel clock titled "Venus and Cupid," crafted from mercury-gilded bronze, white marble, and black marble. Venus, dressed in classical attire, draws Cupid toward her amidst clouds using a floral garland held in her hands. The stepped white marble base is accented by a beaded border and gilded bronze bas-reliefs featuring rosettes, vine tendrils, and putti. The clock rests on a black marble plinth with a concave molding, supported by four gilded bronze toupie feet. Decorative elements such as a crossed-ribbon frieze, floral swags, and a bow complete the composition. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours and has an 8-to-10-day power reserve; it features silk-thread suspension and a striking train mounted on the backplate. The dial is white enamel with Arabic numerals, and the hands are openwork and mercury-gilded.

Note: there is a small loss of enamel on the dial's outer edge between the 11:30 and 1 o'clock positions, which is concealed when the bezel is closed.

Dimensions: Height 37 cm, Width 31 cm, Depth 16 cm; Weight: 13 kg.
Louis XVI period, circa 1785.

The movement is in good working order; the clock retains its original mercury gilding and period movement, including the bell, pendulum, and two keys. The marble elements are in excellent condition, with the white marble showing no staining.
