18th-century Drawing. The Return From The Market
Here is a large gouache from the late 18th century that raises some questions. Having rediscovered the engraving depicting the scene perfectly reversed, we have some information available (photo at the end of the list). This engraving is based on a painting by Johannes van Dalens (1637-1682) from the collection of the Archbishop of Cambrai, and engraved in the last third of the 18th century by Martial Deny (1745-1815?). We have very little information about these two artists. Since the drawing is based on the painting, it would be logical to assume that it is the work of the engraver. However, we currently have no point of comparison. The drawing is of very high quality, mostly in gouache, and for the trees, watercolor over fine pen work. The drawing has been nicely framed since the beginning of the 20th century, and a few tiny black spots in the sky suggest that it must have been restored at that time. The piece is in excellent condition. Dimensions of the drawing (visible area): 33 cm x 47 cm
