Attractive group portrait depicting the 4 children of Jean Gabriel Verne, Count de Besseuil and Julie Sophie Guy de la Findoise, making music together.
The depicted children are:
- Abbe Francois de Besseuil singing.
- Genevieve-Henriette Sophie de Besseuil playing a spinet.
- Louis Gabriel de Besseuil, playing guitar.
- Louis de Besseuil playing violin.
The painting is attributed to Jean Francois Gilles Colson, 1733-1803. It comes from the estate of a Dutch tobacco planters family in Zimbabwe.
It measures 112 x 85 cm and has been relined in the 19th century. It is placed in a Louis 16th hand carved and gilt frame.
On the stretcher there is a lengthy text in brown ink, apparently written by a grandchild of one of the sitters describing the names of all the sitters.
*It was offered in 1992 at Sotheby's Monaco as being attributed to Jean-François Gilles dit Colson (1733–1803).
