He studied under Constant Dutilleux in Arras, then came to work in Eugène Delacroix's studio in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1841, 1843 and 1849. A highly skilled artist, he was often sought after as a "Nègre" by painters such as Horace Vernet and Jean Charles Langlois, who asked him to paint horses or certain elements of their pictures. He himself was above all a painter of battles, tournaments, portraits and landscapes.
