Erotic Crystal Staircase Ball – Japan, Shunga, Belle époque, Japanese-inspired Curiosity
EROTIC STAIR BALL Japan, late 19th – early 20th century Molded and polished crystal, internal painting A rare Japanese-inspired curiosity, this crystal stair ball – sometimes called the “Garden of Delights” or the “Lovers’ Crystal” – reveals, when its spherical surface is magnified, a delicately painted erotic scene in a lush garden. Three stylized figures nude – move within an intimate composition bathed in deep greens, soft pinks, and sunny yellows. The whole evokes the refined spirit of shunga prints, blending sensuality, fantasy, and masterful artistry. It embodies the Belle Époque taste for Oriental objects, both decorative and suggestive. A coveted object, sometimes described as "The Embrace in Crystal" or "Secret Scenes," it captivates with its evocative power and rarity.
The crystal, approximately 11 cm in diameter, has a 1.7 cm hole for mounting. It is in very good overall condition, with some wear visible in the photographs. Weight: 1.663 kg.
