"Berthomme Saint Andre Portrait Of A Young Woman In The Studio Fauvist Benezit School Of Paris Oil On Canvas"
Portrait of a young woman in the painter's studio. This painter is Louis BERTHOMME SAINT ANDRÉ, born in 1905 and died in 1977. He is, of course, listed in the BENEZIT, a photograph of which I have included. He was a student of Cormon and Pierre Laurens. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Français from 1924 to 1929, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, etc. He then received a government grant to go to Algeria. He began his training in mural painting and illustrated numerous books, including some by Colette. In 1954, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in recognition of his work and was the subject of solo exhibitions in the United States and around the world until his death in 1977. He is particularly appreciated in Japan for his depictions of Parisian women. This portrait of a young woman in her studio, accompanied by a cat, is painted with broad, vigorous brushstrokes and warm tawny tones. Note: a very small scale is missing in the background on the left. This oil on canvas is signed in the lower left corner. Size 20 M, for 20 Marine: 73 cm x 50 cm.
