The artist perfectly masters the contrasting effects inherent to the forest of the Basin. The opposition between the deep shade of the pine grove and the solar clarity of the maritime background is rendered with great precision. Lateral lighting strikes the bark of the pines, creating striking chiaroscuro effects that emphasize the relief and texture of the trees.
The work also illustrates the region's traditional resin-tapping activity. The details of the "gemmage" are precisely depicted: collection pots highlighted by touches of light, as well as a barrel placed on the ground in the foreground, bear witness to the work of the resin tappers of the time.
This piece is reminiscent of the compositions of Jean-Roger Sourgen through its treatment of light on the maritime pines and its open perspective onto the water.
The work is signed Franques and dated 1942 in the lower left. On the back, there is an original handwritten inscription: "Printemps dans les bois d’Arcachon. Souvenir."
It is sold with a very beautiful gilded wooden frame, decorated with carved shells and floral motifs (some minor losses to the inner molding are to be noted). The work is in good condition, though a few minor paint flakes should be mentioned (see photos).
