He was born on February 10, 1795, in Dordrecht and died on June 15, 1858, in Argenteuil.
He is considered one of the masters of French Romantic painting.
He began painting at the age of 11 and was a pupil of Pierre-Narcisse GUÉRIN.
He was also the drawing teacher of Princess Marie of Orléans, daughter of King Louis-Philippe.
SCHEFFER was a friend of many famous figures of the time: LISZT, CHOPIN, George SAND, DELACROIX, etc.
He is, of course, listed in the BÉNÉZIT and other major reference works on painting.
Ary SCHEFFER's works are exhibited in several museums in France and abroad (Paris, Angers, Rouen, London, Amsterdam, etc.); the list is too long to enumerate.
The painting is unsigned, but Ary SCHEFFER's style is highly recognizable.
On the back, there is a note indicating that the painting comes from his studio.
It is presented in its original giltwood and stuccoed frame.
The varnish has slightly yellowed over time, but this gives it a beautiful patina.
