Large Painting Saint Mary Magdalene Penitent And Saint Francis Of Assisi XVIIth Religious
The scene derives from the 13th century golden legend of Jacobus de Voragine, which tells how, after the conversion of Mary Magdalene and her flight from Palestine, she took refuge in a mountain cave near Marseille, where she spent the last thirty years of her life. Pious, sensual and repentant, she lies lying in a sparse cave. On the pictorial level, the Pénitente Sainte Marie-Madeleine of this talented painter is inspired by famous paintings of the sixteenth century by Correggio and Titian .
The saint is represented with the ointment jar whose contents she spread on the feet of Christ as well as with the skull and crucifix on which she meditated in the cave.
In the background is Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata, the artist certainly highlighted his affection for Mary Magdalene.
Like him, a forgiven sinner, a lover of Jesus who always listens to his word, like him, patroness of all contemplatives, but also of all missionaries, she, the apostle of the apostles, sent to the sent, is a perfect ecclesial figure. It is known that he often liked to retire to hermitages and preach to the small people as well as to the great. Many places have marked his life and have nearby a chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene (leprosarium of the valley of Assisi, Fonte Colombo where he wrote his rule, the Alverne where he received the stigmata …).
Of large format, this work of the seventeenth century as evidenced by its old network of cracks, is in very good condition.
Some old restorations are present.
Like most paintings of that time, it is not signed to my knowledge. Of high quality, there is certainly a beautiful discovery to make for those who will know to whom to attribute it.
Dimensions: 107 x 61 cm
The photos are taken in natural light.
Neat packaging.
Shipping costs at the expense of the buyer.
I remain at your disposal for any additional information and photos.
