Biography: Clergé was born in Troyes on January 20, 1891. A student of the painter Comergnat, he created his first canvas at the age of 13. By turns employed by a naturalist and a trapeze artist in a circus, Clergé was the very image of the early 20th-century artist: a lover of freedom with little regard for social conventions.

Clergé’s art evolved slowly, and his painting was gradually recognized by the greatest critics of the time. Active in Montparnasse from 1919 onwards, he associated with painters such as Kisling and Modigliani and founded the first company of professional painters and sculptors. He also sought to educate the public and fling open the doors leading to art (excerpt from the work of Sylviane de La Bouillerie). Consequently, in April-May 1926, he achieved resounding success at the Salon des Indépendants. The peak of his career came in 1932 when he laid the foundations for the first Salon Populiste alongside de Falgiolle, Lemonnier, and later Ferdinand Céline, eventually becoming its leading figure.
